Wylei Fixes Responsive Video Emails in iOS 8 (for Real)

Here at Wylei, we’ve been hard at work figuring out how to fix the iOS 8 bug that prevents videos from playing when they’re embedded in emails sent to Apple users. (You can read more about the problem detailed by Litmus here and Email Design Review here.)

Recognizing that a third of consumers read their email exclusively on mobile devices, smart email marketers are designing responsive emails that look great on mobile. Even smarter marketers are embedding video in those emails, as video in email can DOUBLE conversion rates and has lots of other great rewards.

iPhone, iPad and other iOS device users account for over 50% of email opens, so for our clients who use video in emails to drive higher engagement, the release of iOS 8 was seriously disruptive.

That’s why we’re so excited to announce that, after a lot of blood, sweat, and maybe even a few tears, embedded video in iOS 8 is back and better than ever!

In a “Eureka!” moment, Wylei’s Mike Gage developed the first real solution. Now our email marketing clients can send emails to Apple device users who can click to play videos embedded in their emails.

And not only will videos play right inside the email, our code snippet is built with responsive design in mind, allowing the video to scale to fit any device.

As far as we can tell, we’re the only ones who have figured this out so far.

Savvy email marketers are adding video to their email messages in record numbers because video has been proven to increases opens, clicks, loyalty, new subscribers and response rates.

Video messaging marketers know:

  • There are more than 2.5 billion email users worldwide and that number is only expected to grow in the coming years. Experts predict that worldwide revenues for the email market will hit $23.5 billion by the end of 2018. (http://www.mediapost.com/emailinsidersummit/)
  • Video marketing is the fastest growing marketing medium, with six billion hours of video are watched each month on YouTube alone. (YouTube says that’s almost an hour for every person on earth.)
  • Conversion rates improve by at least fifty percent when video was included in email campaigns
  • Videos increase customer’s understanding of your product or service by 74 percent
  • After visiting a video ad, 12 percent of viewers purchased the specific product featured. Click-through rates become two to three times better when explainer videos introducing the product or service were included in their email (per David Daniels, Relevancy Group)
  • That including video in their opt-in confirmation emails eliminated opt-outs by as many as three quarters of new subscribers
  • Short-form videos like Vine are becoming dominant forces in the digital marketing mix
